Feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to start? Craving something real, joyful, or inspiring? Take a step back in time and immerse yourself in the magic of analog photography—a slower, more mindful way to capture beauty. Treat yourself (and a friend!) to an unforgettable experience that adds pizzazz to your creativity and invites you to savor the moment.

Discover the soul-nurturing art of pinhole photography* at the iconic Point Wilson Lighthouse in Fort Worden, Port Townsend, WA. The weekend series offers five individual sessions, including a Friday night pinhole party with DIY camera building. On Saturday and Sunday, there are morning and afternoon sessions, each with a different theme. The weekend is designed so you can take a single session or join us for all five. Each session offers a unique opportunity to capture the rugged coastal beauty and historic charm of the lighthouse while learning to craft one-of-a-kind images with a pinhole camera. Let the experience awaken your creativity and well-being as you come away with more than just captivating photos –you’ll leave with a refreshed spirit and unforgettable memories. No experience? No problem!

*Pinhole photography is the oldest form of analog photography, capturing light through a simple hole in a box. This technique reveals often-overlooked details, transforming scenes into poetic moments.

OVERVIEW OF WORKSHOPS

Pinhole Party + Refreshments

Kick off the weekend with a Pinhole Party on Friday evening! This fun, relaxed gathering is the perfect introduction to pinhole photography and a great way to get into the creative spirit. In this interactive session, you’ll get hands-on experience building your own DIY pinhole camera. Whether it’s your first time experimenting with analog photography or you’re a seasoned enthusiast, this party-style workshop invites you to explore the joy of creating images from scratch. No experience needed. All materials provided.

What to Expect at the Pinhole Party:

  • DIY Camera Building: Learn how to craft a simple pinhole camera from everyday materials. Discover the basics of light exposure and how a tiny hole in a box can capture stunning images.

  • Shooting and Developing Your Photos: Once your camera is ready, take it outside to capture the beautiful evening light around Point Wilson Lighthouse. You’ll then experience the thrill of developing your photos on-site, watching your first images come to life in real time.

  • Social and Creative Atmosphere: Enjoy refreshments, meet other photography enthusiasts, and share tips and inspiration in a laid-back, collaborative environment. With music, laughter, and a spirit of experimentation, this evening session is designed to be a welcoming, no-pressure introduction to the weekend.

Pinsta Pinhole Adventure Sessions

The Pinsta Photo Adventures sessions at Point Wilson Lighthouse offer an extraordinary opportunity to explore analog photography with the unique Pinsta pinhole camera. Over the course of these 3-hour immersive, hands-on sessions, you’ll learn how to use a Pinsta pinhole camera and experience the fun and magic of making photos using a box with a tiny hole and developing them on the spot, without the use of a darkroom. Each day’s itinerary is designed to flow with the rhythms of light and tide, so every moment feels inspired and unique. Join us for one or more sessions to experience the enchanting shifts in light throughout the day. Each session features a unique theme, but participants are also free to create images inspired by whatever speaks to them. No experience needed. All materials provided.

What to Expect in Each Pinsta Photo Adventure Session:

  • Learn how to use a Pinsta pinhole camera.

  • Explore Unique Themes - each session has its own inspiring theme designed to bring out the best of the natural and historic surroundings:

Pinhole Photography and Wellbeing: Capturing Moments of Calm

In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, finding moments of calm and mindfulness can be a challenge. One unique and fulfilling way to achieve this is through pinhole photography. This timeless art form, rooted in simplicity and creativity, allows you to slow down, connect with your surroundings, and find beauty in the ordinary. As you immerse yourself in this meditative process, you'll discover the profound impact it can have on your overall wellbeing.

The Mindful Art of Pinhole Photography

Pinhole photography, an ancient technique that dates back to the earliest days of image-making, involves using a simple, lensless camera. The camera has a tiny aperture—a pinhole—that lets light in to create an image on photographic paper or film. Unlike modern cameras, there are no settings to adjust or screens to preview your shot. It's just you, the camera, and the world around you.

This minimalist approach encourages a slower, more deliberate way of seeing. Each photograph requires patience, as exposures can range from a few seconds to several minutes. The process itself becomes a form of meditation, helping you to focus on the present moment and appreciate the subtleties of light and shadow.

The Wellbeing Benefits of Pinhole Photography

  1. Mindfulness and Presence: The slow, deliberate nature of pinhole photography fosters mindfulness. It draws your attention to the here and now, reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm.

  2. Creativity and Expression: Pinhole photography invites you to experiment and play. The unexpected results can spark joy and creativity, offering a fresh perspective on the world.

  3. Connection with Nature: Often practiced outdoors, pinhole photography encourages you to explore and connect with natural surroundings, enhancing your sense of wellbeing.

  4. Digital Detox: Stepping away from screens and engaging in a hands-on, analog activity provides a much-needed break from digital overload, contributing to better mental health.

  • If you are a performing artist, both the stops are your chance to shine. This is where we can have short performances (5 minutes max) like spoken word, jugglers, and a one-person acoustic band/music.

PT Community Pinhole Photo Project - Summer 2023 Call for Participants

to Aug 30

PT Community Pinhole Photo Project - Summer 2023 Call for Participants

  • Raw Art Collective - Virtual Gallery (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Event Details: You are invited to participate in a community pinhole photo project. Remember making pinhole cameras when you were a kid? The magic of poking a hole in an oatmeal container, adding a piece of photographic paper, sealing it up, and leaving the camera outside for days, and coming back to find a photo?!

You do not need to be a photographer or have any experience with pinhole cameras to participate. No need for a darkroom.

It’s a jam! We love the inexpensive, minimalist, otherworldly, surprise and unexpected elements of pinhole photography. We encourage fun, happy accidents, imperfections, and collaborations!

There is no cost to participate in the community project and it’s open to all. We will take photos with our pinhole cameras (homemade, purchased, or provided by Raw Art Collective) between April 30 and August 30, 2023.

  • CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: Seeking humans with a connection to PT to participate in a community pinhole photo project. Please complete the participant registration form below. Submit up to 10 images of your original pinhole photographs. We will select at least one image from each submitter to be included in the virtual Raw Art Collective gallery. No Fee. Open to All.

  • TYPES OF PINHOLE CAMERAS: You can make your own analog or digital pinhole camera (here is an example of an easy to make pinhole camera; or here), purchase one, share amongst friends, or use one of ours. If you’d like to use one of ours, please contact us to coordinate pick-up and see directions for use below.

  • DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF DIGITAL IMAGES: 8/30/23

  • HOW TO SUBMIT: Send up to 10 digital image(s) by email to therawartcollective@gmail.com or via direct message to @therawartcollective on Instagram by August 30, 2023. Please include the following information:

    • Your name & contact information

    • Photo location(s)

    • Digital image(s) of your pinhole camera(s)

    • Digital image(s) of your pinhole photo(s)

  • Exhibit: Digital images of the winning entry will be displayed in the virtual Raw Art Collective gallery.

  • DISCLAIMER AGREEMENT: Work is submitted at the risk of the person submitting entry and must be legally permissable. Raw Art Collective, its members, or representatives, will not assume any responsibility for the work. Your submission signifies your agreement with the terms and conditions stated, including granting permission to Raw Art Collective to reproduce submitted images for advertising and commercial purposes with photo credit. All proceeds go to support community art projects and events.

  • DIRECTIONS FOR USE OF OUR CAMERAS: We will provide “cameras” made from either altoid tins, film canisters, or cans to produce “solargraphs”, a type of long exposure pinhole photos.

    • The cameras will be pre-loaded with photographic paper. Find a place to set your camera for a 2-4 week exposure, “photo”, where it will be secure.

    • We include a tie to secure your camera to a post/other but you can use any clamps, rubber bands, tape, etc. Just be sure that you don’t cover the pinhole.

    • Once secured, remove the electrical tape that is covering the hole.

    • Depending on how sunny it has been, collect your camera sometime in the next month. Remove the photo paper from the camera and immediately take a digital photo of the paper, “negative”, with your cell phone or other camera. Feel free to invert and enhance your digital photo in any photo editing software or send to us as is.

    • The paper will continue to expose in light. If you’d like to keep your “negative”, put it in a light proof place.

    • You are welcome to keep your camera and re-load with photographic paper for additional exposures.

    • Pinhole photography is experimental and lots of things can happen in a long exposure (e.g. camera can move, water or light can get it, placement of camera, sun exposure) that create beautiful and unexpected images or no images at all.
